November 10-14, 2010

Hyatt Regency Milwaukee

www.uwosh.edu/filmandhistory

*Third Round Deadline: June 1, 2010*

AREA: "Sex and Love in Asian Contexts"

Asia is a big place with a long history of trade and cultural exchange resulting in layered and overlapping religio-cultural spheres--Hindu, Buddhist, Confucian and Islamic, and, later, Western-which have made for rich and complex narrative traditions in which the theme of sex and love plays an important part not only in describing the ineluctable condition of human life but also as a symbolic representation of the transcendent
relationship between humans and the divine. What are the assumptions about the role or meaning of sex and love in Asia? Are there differences between traditional and Western or modern assumptions? How do Asian countries compare? How do they compare over time?

Papers dealing with films from any part of Asia (East, West, Central, South, Southeast) are welcome. Proposals for panels should include the individual proposals for up to four presenters. Topics may include but are not limited to: traditional and customary practices-loved or hated, treatments of historical and modern extra-marital sex and sex workers, love and sex--including homosexuality--as indexes of modernity, cosmo-politanism, or the status of women, love and sex in pre-modern inter-Asian narrative, modern international influences (American and European), distinctively indigenous traditions (Bollywood, Japanese studios, etc.), new developments in contemporary pan-Asian cinema, new developments in the films of Islamic cultures, adaptations

Please send your 200-word proposal by e-mail to the area chair:
