Traditionally, wedding in China had not anything to do with "love": wedding was just a contract, an agreement between two families. The foundation of the Republic of China in 1912 and People's Republic of China in 1949 have not completely changed this old habit. During Maoist era, it was pretty common for a young people to marry a man or a woman of the same unit of work (danwei) or still a person of the same village, known through a "matchmaker". As we can imagine, there were not so many occasions of meetings or opportunity to know new guys or girls, cause there where not bar, discos, party and the mobility of the people was strictly controlled. Generally speaking, about wedding and love, I think nowadays China has not changed that much: if we think about migrant workers we are talking about people who come from poor villages, where traditional habits and culture are still strongly respected. That is why I think this video is not strange or surprising at all, what theese workers do in cities like Beijing, Shanghai or Canton is not look for a girl, seek for love or marry as soon as possible, but look for a job, gain money ad run away to their village to marry through a matchmaker, have at least one baby and spend a serene life.
