Workshop on HOW SAFE IS SAFE? EVALUATING MIGRATION CHANNELS FOR WOMEN MIGRANTS

The workshop aims to chart and deepen our understanding of the expression safe migration channels by critically assessing the supposition that documented channels of migration provide unsurpassed legal protection to migrants and migrant workers. Specifically, it aims to discuss how the effects of womens labour mobility can be coordinated, using different means to maximize the potential of transnational movements, and to alleviate less desirable outcomes for migrants. The objective is to bring together researchers, civil society organizations, faith-based groups and others working on international mobility and to interrogate the contextualized relationships between these movements and the human rights of migrants. The workshops focus is on women migrants since women experience greater vulnerability in the migration process. We invite submission of papers on various aspects of international migration, including, but not limited to the following:
Gendering less-skilled labour mobility, Linking womens labour mobility and safe migration channels, Transnational networks and development, Governance of migration and migration policies, Labour conditions, Issues regarding Integration and adaptation (particularly for foreign brides), What is the impact of differences between immigrants (e.g. gender, age,
human capital) on the questions above?

The women migrants under study will be restricted to Southeast Asian countries while the countries to which they migrate include those within and outside the region.

SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS

Paper proposals should include a title, an abstract (300 words max.) and a short bio-note about yourself (200 words). Please submit and address all applications and enquiries to Dr. Theresa W. Devasahayam (theresa@iseas.edu.sg) by 1 June 2010.

Successful applicants will be notified by 30 June 2010 and will be required to send in a completed paper (5,000-6,000 words) by 30 September 2010.
